How to Write Affirmations that Change Your Life

I am beautiful. I am peaceful. I am a driven, powerful person capable of anything I put my mind to.

These are examples of positive affirmations that we tell ourselves to influence our days and make a positive impact on our mindset.

Affirmations are similar to chants or incantations in that they are inspirational, motivating and keep us from stress or worry. “A big part of who we are is what we tell ourselves.”

But how do you know if an affirmation is working for you? How do you choose the right one? How do you know when it is time to change it up?

First off, if you are reading this, you’ve probably realized that you don’t have to take in the mixed messages of the world. You’re at a place where you would like to be your best influencer. What better way to do so than affirming your blessings and future blessings with positive affirmations.

Secondly, if you haven't heard this before, affirmations work with the power of influence through feelings and repetition. (The media knows that quite well.) So, for an affirmation to work for you, it needs to be linked to an emotion and be repeated often.

Thirdly, an affirmation can be changed whenever your life’s circumstances change. Writing new positive affirmations to infuse into our day-to-day routines is a ritual I recommend doing in a calm setting.

Here’s how I like to write them:

Use the below words to complete the sentence “I am _______.” Notice your thoughts as you read the words. You want to guide your thoughts with lots of love and compassion. Find a few affirmation words that feel like you and some that you would like to add to your day. Take some time to focus on the words that you would like to add and truly believe. Affirmations are about the meaning you give them and the feelings you attach to the meaning. Ask yourself, what steps could you take to get closer to the word that feels true to you?

If you’re not feeling it, it’s not working. Try adding in words that evoke emotion. See the reference chart below.
